Toddler left home alone, found wandering apartment hallways
WOODSTOCK, Ont. -- A Woodstock man has been charged after a three-year-old child was found wandering the hallway of an apartment building Sunday afternoon.
Police said officers responded to a report around 4:30 p.m. that the child had been left unsupervised.
"A neighbour called police saying a child was crying in the hallway," Const. Steve McEwen said.
Police located the child and, later, the father, who was not in the building.
"He left the child alone in an apartment and the child got out," McEwen said.
He said officers were concerned the toddler could have managed to wander outdoors on a day when southern Ontario remained in a deep freeze.
"Fortunately, he didn't get outside. If it had happened on a day like today, who knows what would have happened."
McEwen said the child has been removed from the care of his father.
Wade Messenger, 53, of Woodstock, has been charged with failing to provide the necessities of life.
Last week, a four-year-old child was found naked in the streets of Toronto. A 23-year-old woman is now facing charges, including abandoning a child under 10. It happened just a day after a three-year-old boy died after wandering out into the cold in nothing but a diaper, boots and a T-shirt.
