They bled, they sweat and now they're $50k richer for it.
Teeterville's Fabian and Luayn Sprik were crowned winners of the Discovery Channel's do-it-yourself TV show Blood, Sweat & Tools Monday night. The duo topped four other husband and wife teams to claim “Most Improved” and a cool 50-grand before a live studio audience.
The couples travelled to northern Ontario for filming last fall. Some of their tasks included installing lights, building a deck and tearing down walls. On Monday, three finalists – including Fabian and Luayn – took part in three challenges before a few dozen fans. The Teeterville couple swept the proceedings, and were dubbed the champions after a week of fan voting.
Even before the finale went to air, 'Team Red' felt strongly about their chances to win.
“Every challenge was an immense amount of pressure,” Fabian said in a previous interview. “We're proud of ourselves for managing to stay mostly calm throughout every challenge. There were times of course where the pressure got to us a little bit, but we gained our composure quickly and shot straight through until the end.”
Both Fabian and Luayn were teary eyed as confetti fell in the Burlington area studio.
"I've learned I can rely on Luayn so much more,” Fabian said during the finale. “She's learned so much about the use of tools — she's become a partner more than a go-getter."
Luayn – who shook off a nasty cut to win one of the show's final challenges - was asked what she'll take away from the experience.
"For me, everything,” she responded. “I've used a chainsaw (before filming), but not other power tools, so I've come leaps and bounds since the beginning."
The three DIY experts/hosts of the show also reflected on the jobs done by all teams. Power tool expert Hillary Manion was particularly impressed with Luayn's improvement throughout the couple's journey.
"I am so proud of Luayn and her transition from the person who sort of stood back and was afraid to try new things to the one who would step up, and you made that transition and you guys worked together,” she told 'Team Red'. “I think that was really obvious by the end with your challenges."
In the hours following their big win, Fabian and Luayn showed appreciation for their supporters through a Facebook post.
“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” the post began. “Thanks to all of our family, friends, fans and Canada. Thank you to our tough competitors: Blue Team, Pink Team, Green Team & Purple Team. Thanks to the experts, Proper Television, and Discovery Channel. We're so grateful. It's still sinking in. Thanks everyone! Much love from Team Red. Cheers!”
