Norwich Merchants crush Burford Bulldogs

By Colin Percy

NORWICH -

The start to the second half of the Norwich Merchants' season couldn't have gone much better as their lone game this weekend saw the boys in red and white dominate the Burford Bulldogs on home ice.

Noah Burns kick started the scoring 10 minutes into the game when he wired home his second goal of the season. Daniel Rizzo slipped home his fifth of the year 2:52 later and Blake Pow made it a three goal lead 37 seconds after that.

Jordan Gillis would make it 4-0 in the final minute of the first period sending Burford's goaltender Justin Faux to the bench to start the second period. Burford would claw one back seven minutes into the second, but Norwich responded quickly as Mason Cooper sniped his ninth goal of the season 1:42 later. Derek Slaght made it a five-goal game 1:57 later and Cooper slipped in his second of the game late in the period to give Norwich a 7-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The Merchants' Ray Munro scored twice in the third to hand Norwich a 9-1 victory to move to 11-10 on the season. Troy Vandenbussche, Rizzo, Nathan Innes, Matt Dipaolo, Slaght (2), Gillis, Brett Parsons, Munro (3), Cooper, Troy Lamoure (2) and Pow (2) had assists for Norwich while Tyler Gubesch made 31 saves to earn his sixth win of the season.

A tough weekend is now on tap for the Merchants as they host Paris Friday night at 8 p.m. Following Friday's game Tyler Shazma and his #throwmethatchicken comedy group presents Laughs from the Blue Line Room #5 – an 18+ comedy show featuring some of the best comedians in Ontario. Hamilton's Mike Demissie will headline the show that also features Matthew Ferguson also of Hamilton, Ben Lardie of Toronto, Brandon Macintosh of Paris and Pinegrove's Peter Van Dyk. On Saturday Norwich head to Wellesley for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Apple Jacks.
