Basketball tourney fills city gymns

By Susan Gamble, Brantford Expositor

Every major gymnasium in the city was busy over the weekend as almost 1,000 young basketball players poured into Brantford for one of the annual Paul Mitchell Boys Invitational Basketball Tournaments.

The players, ages eight to 13, came from 80 teams, an increase from last year's banner year when the tourney was celebrating 60 years of CYO basketball.

"We just wish Brantford had more gyms," said convenor Ted Leyzer.

"We used all the high school gyms, the Rise Centre, Branlyn and a couple of the bigger elementary schools."

With the weekend tourneys starting in January, the weather is always a concern, he said, but all the travelling teams made it to the event safely.

And six Brantford teams made it into the semi-finals of the event, including major atom and two bantam level teams which moved on to the finals.

"It's always nice to win on home turf and nice for the kids to play at home where their grandparents can come and see the play," said Leyzer.

The Paul Mitchell event continues in April over two weekends with boys 14 and 15 and then 16 to 18.
