The county will be holding more workshops to help residents learn the proper way to maintain their septic systems.

The Septic Smart! program returns this fall to four different Oxford County communities, equipping homeowners with the information they need to operate and maintain environmentally responsible septic systems.

There are approximately 9,400 homes in the county that use septic systems to treat wastewater and, on average, each system lasts between 30 and 50 years.

Peter Heywood, manager of health protection, said people will learn what they can and can't flush in their toilets, the importance of maintenance and the different types of septic systems.

"There's been an enthusiastic response to these workshops," Heywood said. "based on our inventory, we have over 9,000 septic systems operating in Oxford county. That's a significant number, so certainly we want to enhance people's awareness around the operation and maintenance around these systems that they can apply on a daily basis."

Proper maintenance has a significant impact on how well sys-tems operate and their overall life expectancy.

a properly functioning septic system will effectively reduce or eliminate most threats to human health and the environment posed by pollutants in household waste-water, preventing the spread of infection and disease while protecting water resources.

"we want to protect the wellbeing of the public's health and protect the environment," Heywood said. "we want to ensure that those system operate it in a matter that individuals who do have a septic protects the environment as well The septic smart! workshops as public health." will take place in Embro, Hickson, Norwich and Mt.
