A shooting close to Brantford General Hospital left one man dead and threw the hospital into lockdown mode for several hours on New Year’s Day.

Police were called to St. Paul Avenue and Terrace Hill Street – the same block where the hospital is located – just after 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 1 for an adult male suffering life-threatening injuries.

The man, suffering from a gunshot wound, was taken to the nearby emergency room but later died, hospital officials said in a media release.

“Although the shooting did not occur on hospital property, a lockdown was imposed at 5:42 p.m. this evening in the interest of patient and staff safety,” Stefany Snedden, spokesperson for the Brant Community Healthcare System, said Monday.

The lockdown was lifted at 7:10 p.m.

Police said they did not believe there was any risk to public safety.
