Oxford OPP said they have been dealing with multiple crashes across the region and on the Highway 401 corridor due to weather conditions.

A flash freeze combined with rain, ice and snow have created slippery road sections.

OPP are advising local residents to take precautions during icy road conditions, including giving themselves more time to get to their destination.

  • Drivers are advised to leave a larger space between their vehicle and vehicles travelling ahead of them.
  • Drivers should plan ahead to arrive at their destinations safely and consider the following before heading out:
  • Purchase or prepare an emergency kit with water, blankets, flashlight, charged cellphone and food.
  • Check the weather and road conditions along your travel route.
  • Ensureyour vehicle is in proper working order and consult a licensed mechanic with any concerns.
  • Carry extra washer fluid, verify tire pressure and do not allow fuel levels to fall below a half tank whenever possible.
  • Wear your seat belt.
  • Use your headlights at all times; daytime running lights do not engage rear tail lights.
  • Consult local media for road closures before leaving.

OPP are also advising the public not to contact 911 for road conditions. Road closures can be obtained by calling 511 or checking the Ministry of Transportation websites.

To report concerning driving behaviour pull over and call police at 1-888-310-1122 or 911 in the event of an emergency.
