Southwestern Ontario’s Postmedia journalists have hauled in 20 Ontario Newspaper Awards nominations, reflecting their dominance in this region’s news coverage.

Led by The London Free Press and its eight nods, reporters, photographers and editors across the region were named finalists in more than a dozen different categories, organizers announced Thursday.

The Free Press series 27 Minutes, chronicling a dramatic Highway 401 winter rescue that helped to bring a woman back to life, is nominated in the prestigious ONA special project category. The series was written by Free Press reporter Jane Sims, with photographs and videos shot by Morris Lamont.

Veteran Free Press photographer Mike Hensen is a finalist in two photojournalism categories.

The Windsor Star earned seven nominations. The Woodstock Sentinel-Review earned a pair. The Chatham Daily News, Stratford Beacon Herald and Simcoe Reformer have one each.

The annual awards recognize exceptional journalism produced by reporters, photographers, videographers, graphic artists and editors across all daily newspapers in Ontario outside Toronto.

Award winners will be announced at a celebration April 28 in Toronto.
