The Otterville Pool is making a splash this summer.
The summer is jam-packed with swimming lessons and activities for children and adults all season long.
Pool supervisor Sam Hogg said she understands there is a lot of speculation out there over the pool because of the large dollar figure attached to pool upgrades, but she wants people to know the pool is open for business and her staff is ready for all of the township's swimming needs.
"This pool is really important to people, I think," Hogg said. "We get a lot of families here. It gives them something to do that's affordable and brings them together. I think people really have an attachment to this pool."
Norwich Township council has agreed to start upgrades on the pool this fall as soon as a successful tender can be obtained. The first phase of the pool project, dubbed Big Splash will see an overhaul of the mechanical workings of the pool including the filtration system and the pump.
But before the work starts, play begins.
All of the service groups in the area are pooling together to run a bus from the outlying communities to the pool on Tuesday and Thursday for public swims. Children can be picked up in Holbrook, Burgessville, Norwich and Springford on those days and will be dropped back off when the swim is over.
"We're really hoping people will get on board with that idea. It's a great day for the kids and they are safe at the pool with us," she said.
Hogg said swimming lessons for session two, going on now, were encouraging. The classes were completely booked with all ages of swimmers, from those just learning to swim or those developing those skills already learned.
She admitted session one had been a little slow but added that is the case every year with that class because most families are on holidays right at the beginning of July.
Session number three starts Aug. 2 and there are still spots available.
Added this year is a program called Aqua Moms, Pops and Tots. The program is designed to introduce babies to water and runs Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Aquafit is going strong again this year and is held on Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 9 p.m.
"We really have instructors that are enthusiastic and get people into it. It's a great time," Hogg said.
Public swims are held at the pool daily, Monday to Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and on weekends swim times are extended to 1 to 4 p.m. and then the regular 6 to 8 p.m.
The Otterville Otters swim team also calls Otterville Pool their home. This year the team will be hosting the Tri-County meet on Aug. 21. Teams from across the county will participate in the all day event. Everyone is welcome to watch the competition. Regular swim meets are also held on Wednesdays at the pool.
